For the past few months I have had the opportunity to experience life in London, one of the biggest and most diverse cities in the world. I am enrolled at Goldsmith’s College of London located in the southeast region of the city. It is situated in a very interesting part of the city; it is around a twenty minute commute to get into the center of the city but this part of London has a character of its own. I don’t live in a touristy area at all and this has allowed me to really immerse in the everyday experience of the locals.
The courses that I have taken at Goldsmith’s have not only allowed me to learn more about the history and culture of this city, but they also take me to on site locations and field trips every week. I have experienced an array of museums, historical sites, and live performance art; all due to my curriculum.
At home I am a Corporate Communications major and I can already say that my outlook on global and local media has been altered since I have been abroad. Everywhere that I have been thus far in my travels from other areas of England to Belgium, influences of American culture and media can be spotted. This ranges from music, news, television, and film. I knew that our media industry had a global presence but traveling and hearing sounds and seeing images that I find familiar makes me want to immerse in the local media that other countries have to offer. I have now started to pay more attention to the local news and take part in events that are produced by London artists and professionals. Hopefully this engagement will allow me to bring a few things back to America when I depart for home!
